So as I couldn't quite find the dresses I wanted to have for my Catwalk looks I decided to make the dresses myself.I had to sew them by hand as I don't own a sewing machine and also it was the first time for me to actually design and make clothing. Before I ever only sew buttons back on or fixed something but never something as major as this. It was a really great experience even though there were times I got bored of it or because I made my life unnecessarily difficult because I didn't pay attention to what I was doing. But in the end I had two dresses and that's what counts
The first dress was for the 'Day' Catwalk look and as the makeup design was rather simple I wanted to keep the dress more 'simple' and 'plain'. As I wanted to use black for the other dress I thought grey would be a nice contrast.
I bought all of the fabrics at Fabric Land so it wasn't too expensive either.
For both dresses I bought a silky fabric in the chosen colour( grey and black) as well as grey tutu fabric (I already had a black one at home) and some black and grey lace and I had to buy some grey thread. And I also bought two zippers.
At uni I took Rosie's measurements (the ones that I thought were important) and measured the fabric at home. Then I cut the fabric to the right size, I actually left some extra fabric just in case, and attached the zipper. Now for the grey dress I did the whole zipper and closed off the back right in the beginning so later it was a bit difficult to attach the lace and tutu skirt. That's why I changed the order slightly when I was doing the second dress.
In the images below you can see how it looked after sewing on the zipper first and then later closing off the rest of the back
I left a few centimeters open just in case.
Then I took the tutu fabric to make the skirt part of the dress and tried to sew it on , having the waistline in mind-> later when I did the shoots I saw that the skirt part was slightly too low but it was still alright with me. afterwards I sew the lace band just above the skirt bit so the skirt would blend it nicely.
And here we have the finished dress. I also made kind of 'knots' -they are not really knots- into the lower part(tutu fabric) to make it look more voluminous.
I basically did the same thing with the black dress apart from the fact that I didn't close off the whole back at the very beginning so it was easier and way faster to sew on the tutu fabric and the lace cord.
I also added some black lace at top(where it starts at the chest) to make it a bit more different. Also I thought it looked nice. The tutu bit is also slightly different as I added more layers of fabric and I added an extra longer section only at the back. It looked a bit like those really long wedding veils.
Again I added the 'knots' to give it overall more volume and to pull up the sides a bit.
Even though the dresses are far away from being perfect I had a lot of fun making them and for being the first dresses I ever made by hand they are not too bad:) Also after seeing my images from the shoot and seeing that they still came out good made be well proud.
