Givenchy S/S 2016

LA REVELATION ORIGINELLE

The Givenchy S/S 2016 makeUp Collection is all about highlighter and lipsticks/lipgloss in pale and pastel pink hues and their pastel yellow and blue eye shadow.
Even though the blue and yellow eye shadow may look quite colour intense in the images, you can clearly see that it looks more pastel like on the actual skin.

The 'La Revelation Originelle' Collection consists of the following
  • Givenchy Ombre Couture in the shades No.15 Bleu Celeste and No.16 Jaune Aurora
  • Givenchy Liner Couture in No.2 Brown
  • Givenchy Le Vernis in No.29 Rose Halo
  • Givenchy Poudre Lumiere Originelle
  • Givenchy Mister Gentlebalm which comes in a soft pink

What I personally like about this collection are the pastel tones and that eerie and fairy like finish it gives off. And even though I am not really a pink person I do like the softer pink tones from the 'La Revelation Originelle' Collection. But with having those bright looking eye shadows, I feel like people might be put off at them first as they look very intense and it is not like most of the people wear yellow or blue as their everyday makeup. But as soon as they test the eye shadow on their skin they will see that the colours are more pale looking.

Givenchy- History

Hubert Taffin de Givenchy is the founder and  created the 'House of Givenchy'. He was born in 1927 into a family of aristocratic French and Italian origins. When Hubert Taffin de Givenchy was younger he spent a lot of time with his grandmother which made him interested in costumes. After some time he also showed interest in drawing and architecture, which of course is an important aspect for his later career. On the 3rd February 1952 Hubert Taffin de Givenchy opened his Couture House in Paris and present his first collection to the public. His collection consisted of "ensembles of chic, functional, interchangeable blouses and skirts sold at reasonable prices, offering women new freedom." (www.givenchybeauty.com/history). His first garment was a white cotton blouse with flounced lace sleeves which was supposed to set a comfortable, refined and simple clothing style.

Here are some examples from his first collection from 1952/53

In 1957 Hubert de Givenchy created his first perfume 'L'Interdit' for his muse and very good friend Audrey Hepburn.
"L'Interdit like Audrey Hepburn, possess a unique mix of fashion, grace and spontaneity that is exclusively, Givenchy."( www.givenchybeauty.com/history)

Two years later ,in 1959, Givenchy presented his first male perfume 'Monsieur'. Monsieur consists of citrus-woody notes of bergamot, lemon, verbena and lavender, Hinoki wood and Oakmoss .

As said earlier Audrey Hepburn was known as Hubert Givenchy's muse and he dressed her for her films.

Givenchy-The Logo

The Givenchy logo was designed by Pierre Dinand in the 1970's.

Pierre Dinand is a french perfume bottle designer and designed over the last 50 years over 500 different perfume bottles. He worked for Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, Fendi, Valentino, Givenchy, Dior, Tiffany& Co., L'Occitane and many more.

Givenchy's logo stands for quality, balance and stability. It also unites the symbolism of the number four and squares as well as signifies loyalty, solidity and order.
" The square is one of the fundamental symbolic figures in design, along with the circle. It represents stabilisation in perfection and symbolises all creative activity in the realm of time and space." (www.givenchybeauty.com/history)

From the 1970's until today Givenchy created many more perfumes, for example ' Ysatis', 'Givenchy Gentleman', 'Eau de Givenchy', ' π ' and many more. Staring from 1989 Givenchy also developed and distributed it's own makeup collection. It started off with the founding of Givenchy Beauté. The first eye shadow palettes contained 4 different shades which could be applied on it's own or mixed together. Over time the colours changed from more darker and natural colours to more brighter ones, like pink tones. It also developed its own eyeliner and mascara range. Apart from makeup products Givenchy sells also skin care products like the 'Hydra Sparkling' range,  'Vax’In For Youth' which is an "age defying cosmetic vaccine", Smile' N Repair range, etc.
In 1991 Hubert de Givenchy opened his first Givenchy Spa near Paris. Today there are 4 spas worldwide.

Even though Givenchy's range got broader over time it never lost its chic and elegant appeal.

Nowadays the Givenchy Catwalk shows are especially known for Pat McGrath's (makeup artist) eccentric designs which go in harmony with Givenchy's clothes collection.

Choosing a Brand

When I was thinking about which brand to choose I wanted to pick a brand that not many people would chose. Because I feel that you could become too pressured and stressed out if a lot of people do the same and you see what they are doing and may compare it with what you wanted to do.
My initial first choice was Givenchy but after talking to friends and classmates they said they are also doing Givenchy so that's why I was put off Givenchy first. Even though I knew that Givenchy would give me great freedom when it  would come to my designs. So then I thought I would go with Shiseido but after doing some research on the brand I decided not to. Personally for me it was hard to come up with any design ideas for the brands S/S collection as Shiseido hasn't got a clothes collection like many of the others do. For me it is easier to come up with ideas after seeing the clothes collection and the makeup collection. After considering other brands as well I went back to Givenchy. I am quite excited to develop my designs when it come to the makeup but at the moment I am still a bit "afraid" when it comes to the styling for my final shoots. But then again I still have some time to figure that out.

Matte and Dewey Skin

Products:

  • cleanser
  • toner
  • moisturizer
  • primer
  • foundation/ BB cream
  • highlighter
  • brush kit
  • cape
  • illuminator
-> it is a clean skin look
Steps:
  • make sure the skin is thoroughly clean
  • if skin is too dry you can apply a face mask sheet for a couple of minutes to give it more moisture
  • massage the face with your fingers to get the blood going-> will give a fresh look
  • dewey skin: make sure face is well moisturized, apply a light foundation or BB cream depending on how much covering is needed, , mix in some illuminator into the the foundation for some extra glow, only really conceal areas that need to be concealed; don't apply powder when doing dewey skin; now you can add some extra cream highlighter on cheekbones , nose, cupids bow.
  • for a more matte finish just finish of the dewey look with powder(if you are doing a matte look after a dewey one)
  • if you just do a normal matte look leave out the illuminator and don't use too much of the highlighter
  • fill in the eyebrows naturally
  • give the face a bit of a contour

During the lesson I only managed to do the matte look because of time reasons but I also forgot to bring in some of the products I really like for creating dewey skin

Blow Drying

Tools and Product List:

  • hair dryer with nozzle
  • hair mousse
  • paddle brush
  • round brushes
  • pin tail comb
  • sectioning clips
  • cape
  • heat protection spray
  • sea salt spray
  • denman brush

General points about blow drying
  • before the blow dry wash the hair and comb hair with a large comb( afro comb) thoroughly->will reduce the trauma on the hair
  • before you start look at the hair type: is it coloured?, dry?, broken/damaged?,...; do a consultation with your client/model and know which products you have to use
  • blow dry(just blasting) until 80% of the hair is dry (semi- dry hair)-> only then you start the proper blow dry
  • add products into hair; don'z add them into soaking wet hair
  • apply heat protection
  • you can use hair mousse but pay attention that it is not the sticky kind of mousse
  • don't apply too much of the products into the roots because otherwise they will become greasy
  • you can also apply a small amount of sea salt spray into the ends
  • clean your hands before you start the blow dry
  • make sure the back of the hair dryer has a filter on!!, otherwise hair can get stuck in there
  • nozzle on hair dryer-> the nozzle is important  for the direction of the air flow
  • don't put the hair dryer between your legs!, put it into a holder of a trolley or put it aside

Sleek Blow Dry:
Steps:
  • make sure your sections are straight
  • put in mousse before you start
  • you can use a paddle brush or denman brush-> denman brush will give a little bit of a lift
  • hold your thumb on top of the hair and slide down the brush
  • for the side sections go slightly into the face
  • flick at the ends?-> flick up the ends while going through with the brush
  • don't put new (wet) sections onto finished dry sections
  • make sure the hair is really dry otherwise the blow dry will collapse
  • after the hair is completely dry dress it out
  • if you want to have more of a lift even though your are doing a sleek blow dry , you can use one of the round brushes for the roots and finish  the blow dry off with the paddle or denman brush
  • for my sleek blow dry I used a paddle brush as my model had long hair and it just made it easier
  • I started from the back and worked up to the top of the head and then went over to the sides
  • I also decided on a slight side parting

Volume/Curling Blow Dry:
Steps:
  • if the person you are working on has a fringe, dry the fringe first
  • start at the back-> section off the crown area into a u-shape as you don't want to see where the sections were later
  • section off the sides as well
  • then section off another u-shaped section
  • use the round brushes; larger brush->bigger volume/lift/curl
  • we want to achieve a lift and curl
  • check that the nozzle is in the right position
  • power/heat on high; if you have someone with damaged hair use high power and medium heat setting
  • take a section and lift it up high
  • always start with the roots-> angle hairbrush and hold hair dryer in a certain angle->sketch for that in the notebook
  • keep going into the roots with the brush a few times to get a nice lift
  • when done with roots and mid length(everything has to be dry) ,dry the ends->curls won't need as much drying time
  • for doing the curls use the round brush like a tong
  • roll in the hair and heat it up with the blow dryer
  • roll out the brush
  • set the curls with gribs if necessary
  • also remember that the hair sections should always be brush size
  • upper u-section-> heat up the roots from underneath and above
  • if you want to backcomb the curls later use dry shampoo instead of hairspray as the hairspray can be too heavy and will ruin the curls
  • use hairspray for the ends and don't spray from too close

-> during this lesson I realized that blow drying, even the sleek blow dry, is not as easy as I imagined :)
-> unfortunately I only managed to do the sleek blow dry during the lesson so I need to do the volume and curl blow dry at some point at home
->and even though the sleek blow dry is not too complicated I should practice it as well as I kept forgetting certain steps while doing it, I forgot for example to add the mousse before I started and I need to work on my sectioning and keep them really clean and straight the next time

Introduction To The Brief

For this unit (beauty and the brand) we were asked to choose a brand(we had a list with certain brands) and then through thoroughly research of the brand we had create 6 images that represents the brand but also their  S/S 2016 . The 6 images had to consist of 2 Catwalk images, 2 Editorial images and 2 Advertising images (day and night contrast).
I am very keen to start this unit as it sounds very interesting and it seems that we have a lot of freedom when it comes to designing. It also means that we will actually learn more of the brands we might use everyday but never really bothered to look into more. But on the other hand we could also explore brands we haven't used or heard of before and it will broaden our overall knowledge. After the first look at the brands I would like to chose one that I don't know much about or maybe one that the others don't really want to do? I just don't want to choose a brand that everyone will choose. Also as I want more room for my own creativity I would like to choose a brand that gives me that freedom.
A thing I am a bit worried about is the styling. I personally thing that I am not that good with fashion and styling but I still want to do all of the steps on my own. This means designing the whole outfit, getting the clothes, finding right models and of course photography and afterwards the editing. I know we are supposed to work more with other people and make connections but I also like to learn new things and get better in photography. That's why I see the whole styling the model myself thing as a challenge to improve myself and hopefully I won't completely mess up :)
