Givenchy- History

Hubert Taffin de Givenchy is the founder and  created the 'House of Givenchy'. He was born in 1927 into a family of aristocratic French and Italian origins. When Hubert Taffin de Givenchy was younger he spent a lot of time with his grandmother which made him interested in costumes. After some time he also showed interest in drawing and architecture, which of course is an important aspect for his later career. On the 3rd February 1952 Hubert Taffin de Givenchy opened his Couture House in Paris and present his first collection to the public. His collection consisted of "ensembles of chic, functional, interchangeable blouses and skirts sold at reasonable prices, offering women new freedom." (www.givenchybeauty.com/history). His first garment was a white cotton blouse with flounced lace sleeves which was supposed to set a comfortable, refined and simple clothing style.

Here are some examples from his first collection from 1952/53

In 1957 Hubert de Givenchy created his first perfume 'L'Interdit' for his muse and very good friend Audrey Hepburn.
"L'Interdit like Audrey Hepburn, possess a unique mix of fashion, grace and spontaneity that is exclusively, Givenchy."( www.givenchybeauty.com/history)

Givenchy's logo stands for quality, balance and stability. It also unites the symbolism of the number four and squares as well as signifies loyalty, solidity and order.
" The square is one of the fundamental symbolic figures in design, along with the circle. It represents stabilisation in perfection and symbolises all creative activity in the realm of time and space." (www.givenchybeauty.com/history)

From the 1970's until today Givenchy created many more perfumes, for example ' Ysatis', 'Givenchy Gentleman', 'Eau de Givenchy', ' π ' and many more. Staring from 1989 Givenchy also developed and distributed it's own makeup collection. It started off with the founding of Givenchy Beauté. The first eye shadow palettes contained 4 different shades which could be applied on it's own or mixed together. Over time the colours changed from more darker and natural colours to more brighter ones, like pink tones. It also developed its own eyeliner and mascara range. Apart from makeup products Givenchy sells also skin care products like the 'Hydra Sparkling' range,  'Vax’In For Youth' which is an "age defying cosmetic vaccine", Smile' N Repair range, etc.
In 1991 Hubert de Givenchy opened his first Givenchy Spa near Paris. Today there are 4 spas worldwide.

Even though Givenchy's range got broader over time it never lost its chic and elegant appeal.

Nowadays the Givenchy Catwalk shows are especially known for Pat McGrath's (makeup artist) eccentric designs which go in harmony with Givenchy's clothes collection.
