- hair dryer with nozzle
- hair mousse
- paddle brush
- round brushes
- pin tail comb
- sectioning clips
- cape
- heat protection spray
- sea salt spray
- denman brush
General points about blow drying
- before the blow dry wash the hair and comb hair with a large comb( afro comb) thoroughly->will reduce the trauma on the hair
- before you start look at the hair type: is it coloured?, dry?, broken/damaged?,...; do a consultation with your client/model and know which products you have to use
- blow dry(just blasting) until 80% of the hair is dry (semi- dry hair)-> only then you start the proper blow dry
- add products into hair; don'z add them into soaking wet hair
- apply heat protection
- you can use hair mousse but pay attention that it is not the sticky kind of mousse
- don't apply too much of the products into the roots because otherwise they will become greasy
- you can also apply a small amount of sea salt spray into the ends
- clean your hands before you start the blow dry
- make sure the back of the hair dryer has a filter on!!, otherwise hair can get stuck in there
- nozzle on hair dryer-> the nozzle is important for the direction of the air flow
- don't put the hair dryer between your legs!, put it into a holder of a trolley or put it aside
Sleek Blow Dry:
Steps:
- make sure your sections are straight
- put in mousse before you start
- you can use a paddle brush or denman brush-> denman brush will give a little bit of a lift
- hold your thumb on top of the hair and slide down the brush
- for the side sections go slightly into the face
- flick at the ends?-> flick up the ends while going through with the brush
- don't put new (wet) sections onto finished dry sections
- make sure the hair is really dry otherwise the blow dry will collapse
- after the hair is completely dry dress it out
- if you want to have more of a lift even though your are doing a sleek blow dry , you can use one of the round brushes for the roots and finish the blow dry off with the paddle or denman brush
- for my sleek blow dry I used a paddle brush as my model had long hair and it just made it easier
- I started from the back and worked up to the top of the head and then went over to the sides
- I also decided on a slight side parting
Volume/Curling Blow Dry:
Steps:
- if the person you are working on has a fringe, dry the fringe first
- start at the back-> section off the crown area into a u-shape as you don't want to see where the sections were later
- section off the sides as well
- then section off another u-shaped section
- use the round brushes; larger brush->bigger volume/lift/curl
- we want to achieve a lift and curl
- check that the nozzle is in the right position
- power/heat on high; if you have someone with damaged hair use high power and medium heat setting
- take a section and lift it up high
- always start with the roots-> angle hairbrush and hold hair dryer in a certain angle->sketch for that in the notebook
- keep going into the roots with the brush a few times to get a nice lift
- when done with roots and mid length(everything has to be dry) ,dry the ends->curls won't need as much drying time
- for doing the curls use the round brush like a tong
- roll in the hair and heat it up with the blow dryer
- roll out the brush
- set the curls with gribs if necessary
- also remember that the hair sections should always be brush size
- upper u-section-> heat up the roots from underneath and above
- if you want to backcomb the curls later use dry shampoo instead of hairspray as the hairspray can be too heavy and will ruin the curls
- use hairspray for the ends and don't spray from too close
-> during this lesson I realized that blow drying, even the sleek blow dry, is not as easy as I imagined :)
-> unfortunately I only managed to do the sleek blow dry during the lesson so I need to do the volume and curl blow dry at some point at home
->and even though the sleek blow dry is not too complicated I should practice it as well as I kept forgetting certain steps while doing it, I forgot for example to add the mousse before I started and I need to work on my sectioning and keep them really clean and straight the next time
